Archbishop Chaput would rather fight than switch

Remember the cigarette ads? the tagline was “I’d rather fight than switch”

You’ve gotta love Archbishop Chaput, I think he’d rather fight than switch too.

EWTN.com - Vatican Cardinal Sides with Denver Archbishop in Debate over Catholic Charities
Last week, Chaput objected to a proposed measure before the Colorado legislature which would bar charitable agencies that receive state funding from discrimination on the basis of religion in personnel policies. Chaput argued that such a measure would compromise the Catholic identity of church-run charities, and that he would rather see those charities stop delivering services rather than comply.

I wonder if Bishop William Lori of Connecticut is a fighter or a switcher. The Catholic hospitals in Connecticut recently chose to comply with a state requirement to provide “emergency contraceptive” (CWN Story) in cases of rape.

Archbishop O’Malley of Boston looks like a fighter, not a switcher, in this 2006 story from The Boston Globe:

In a stunning turn of events, Archbishop Sean P. O’Malley and leaders of Catholic Charities of Boston announced yesterday that the agency will end its adoption work, deciding to abandon its founding mission, rather than comply with state law requiring that gays be allowed to adopt children.

The Chaput story and EWTN link was by way of The Curt Jester.

New Functions for 3/4

Filed under: 3/4 Marines, USMC — Captoe @ 3:05 pm

I’m not a trained marine or soldier, so ignore me and read the article, but I think that flying remote control binoculars = “cool” and knowing where the bad guys are = “good”.

Corps creates intel cells at rifle-company level - Marine Corps News, news from Iraq, photos from the war, late breaking reports - Marine Corps Times
The Corps is creating company-level intelligence cells — called C-LICs — in an attempt to plug the hole and curb the loss of valuable intelligence that often goes missing when units pass the baton on the battlefield, Marine officials said.

In a separate but concurrent initiative, 3/4 also will get 48 Wasp micro-unmanned aerial vehicles, outfitted with night vision. The Wasp is a backpack-sized UAV, referred to as “flying binoculars,” Goulding said. “We’re going to send that over as well, to kind of check how it works, the training, because [Marine Corps] Systems Command is getting ready to buy a lot of them and we want to make sure we train and distribute properly.”

“What it really comes down to is finding the enemy,” Diana said. “It’s working more efficiently. If you can focus your operations through the use of this intel cell, then you’re just working more efficiently rather than just going out to do operations after operations,” he said.

Teen nails burglar with bat inside Mesa home
A 14-year-old boy came face to face with a burglar ransacking his Mesa home on Tuesday and used a baseball bat to level the playing field.

It’s been a long time since we had anything for the “Strength to Carry On” file.
