The State of Mexico

Filed under: Uncategorized — Captoe @ 7:11 pm

I read this quote from the Mexican State Address
State of Mexico Addressed, by Invitation Only Calderón Delivers Speech At Ceremonial Palace

The Mexican government, he said, would continue to “energetically protest unilateral actions” of the U.S. Congress on the immigration front that he said “exacerbate the persecution of undocumented Mexicans in the U.S.” He boasted that Mexican consulates in the United States have been buttressed to protect the rights of millions of Mexicans living there illegally.

“Wherever there is a Mexican,” he said, “that is Mexico.”

Here it is on HotAir and here on the Arizona Republic.

When you read a thing like that, it’s hard not to wonder what he really meant. Technically, literally, he’s saying that Arizona is in Mexico, Texas is in Mexico. He’s saying that the United States is in Mexico.

He’s saying that this is a direct result of Mexicans being present in the U.S. This sheds light on his prior statement about the persecution of the undocumented Mexicans here in the U.S. If they’re on Mexican soil, our trying to throw them out has been a terrible mistake. If you lived here, you’d be home by now.
If the presence of Mexicans is the thing that makes Arizona Mexico, and it was not so before the Mexicans got here (scratch that, there has never been an Arizona with no Mexicans in it) rather, if Arizona would cease to be Calderón’s Mexico if all the Mexicans left, that qualifies the Mexicans as an occupying force.
Nah, he can’t have meant that. That would mean that we’ve been invaded by a sizeable force armed mostly with leafblowers.

No, I guess that’s not what he meant, that’s not realistic.
Maybe he meant that Mexico is a thing without borders. Like a club, or a society, one that doesn’t manage borders or an economy. Yeah, that sounds more realistic.

This should make it easier to get “authentic” Mexican food around here.

Newsflash: Virgin Mary not a Goddess

Filed under: Catholic — Captoe @ 3:47 pm

…and thinking she is is not Catholic.

Six Arkansas nuns excommunicated for heretical teachings.

NWAnews.com :: Northwest Arkansas’ News Source
The nuns are involved with the Community of the Lady of All Nations, better known as the Army of Mary. Catholic authorities say the Quebec, Canadabased group elevates the Virgin Mary to the level of God and believes its founder is a reincarnation of the mother of Jesus.
-*-*-*-*-*-
Excommunication bars members from leading the church liturgy or receiving communion and the other sacraments.

-*-*-*-*-*
But, he said, the nuns had elevated Giguere over Christ’s teaching.

The nuns can still attend Mass. If they renounce the group’s teachings, they can return to full communion with the church.

Rat. Fish. Ratfish!

Filed under: Uncategorized — Captoe @ 2:34 pm

Todays installment of “Muppets in the Wild”.

It’s like a rat, it’s like a fish, it’s a ratfish. An albino ratfish to be precise. If nature was a TV program, it would be a variety show. There would be comic relief and maybe even an amphibious emcee.

From National Geographic:

Photo in the News: “Ugly” Albino Ratfish Captured
Ratfish, bottom-dwelling relatives of skates and stingrays, are usually brown with white spots that act as camouflage.

Hope Autodefenestrates.

This is the best single sentence I wrote all day yesterday, I thought I ought to save it for posterity:

“Hope autodefenestrates.”

You might enjoy knowing that it was written on a “problem ticket” a document that reports technical issues.

Happy Birthday Uncle Stevie

Filed under: Books, Photo — Captoe @ 1:25 pm

I was reading a post on photographer Alec Soth’s blog where Alec linked to this Entertainment Weekly article by Stephen King.

Stephen King: Lessons from ”Ellen” | Entertainment Weekly
…a customer shopping in Best Buy — just an ordinary fortysomething dude dressed in jeans, a black T-shirt, and sunglasses. Looks like that male-pattern baldness thing is starting to make itself known in his life. He’s shopping, I guess. Then the clip’s audio kicks in with one of the greatest rock songs of all time: ”Going to a Go-Go,” by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles. (No, it’s not on my list. Silly me, I forgot it.) Shopper dude with the thinning hair starts to move a little. Checks out something on the counter of a momentarily unattended checkout station. It’s of no interest to him, but the music starts to hit him. He pops a hip. And then — great God A’mighty — he starts to dance. Before long he’s really busting moves; I mean this guy is doing his duty and shaking his booty. If your Uncle Stevie is lyin’, he’s dyin’.

The Best Buy dancer video is on YouTube right here.

As I read the King article it dawned on me that is Uncle Stevie’s birthday today. Happy B’Day Uncle Stevie!
I’m not related to Stephen King whatsoever as far as I know. We’ve never met. I call him Uncle Stevie, and he calls me “Constant Reader”. It’s a pretty cozy relationship.

He has an auction up on eBay right now, in case you don’t have the Dark Tower series yet and five grand is burning a hole in your wallet.
What makes you boogie in the aisles?

Velociraptor, the terrifying predator made famous in the movie “Jurassic Park,” appears to have had feathers in real life.

Ahoy, ’tis the day for talkin’ like a pirate. September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day.

We’re no haven to pirates here on this blog, but efforts to save an endangered language will be tolerated. Neither the endangered language story in today’s National Geographic nor the similar story in the Washington Post mention Pirate among the languages of concern. Perhaps the ongoing efforts of www.talklikeapirate.com have pulled Pirate Lingo back from the brink of extinction.

All the same, if you’re going to take it up proper like you ought to study beyond the basic Yars, Ahoys, and Avasts. You’ll be needin’ The Pirate Primer.

The editor of A.Word.a.Day is Anu Garg. (What an excellent name for Pirate-talk day, “Garrrrgh”.) The Wordsmith has selected “Grog” for the word of the day. I, for one, don’t trust this to be mere coincidence.

Our post from last year is here, she’s a worthy vessel that one, she’s a proper parlei. Good night Westley. Good work. Sleep well. I’ll most likely kill you in the morning.

Disturbing Discovery?

Filed under: Catholic, Christian — Captoe @ 7:51 pm

At the end of a post about Kabbalah Scott Adams asks a thought provoking question:

The Dilbert Blog: Kabbalah

A number of celebrities, notably Madonna, are embracing a religion called Kabbalah. Celebrities I say! That is all the endorsement I need. I decided it was time to look into it.
-*-*-*-
What would be the most disturbing thing you could find out about God?

His line is that he’s not going to pursue Kabbalah any farther since it might lead to disturbing knowledge about God. Learning that He prefers squirrels lives over human lives would be unsettling, but I prefer my answer:

I don’t think anything could be more disturbing than the possibility that an all-powerful eternal God became human and suffered death by whipping and crucifixion. That his death is an atonement for my sins. That he is present body blood soul and divinity in a timeless sacrifice of bread and wine. That I have eaten and drunk said sacrifice. That I will one day be found to have done so unworthily and in direct disobedience.

Between us, as frightened as I am of this possibility, it is the dearest hope of my soul.

What would be the most disturbing thing you could find out about God?

Comments open, for a change.

For “Photographers Who Are Not Weston or Adams month”, I offer you Yousuf Karsh for consideration. His name was completely new to me just this month, but if you click here, you’ll see that his photographs are already stuck somewhere in your mind.

If you said “Hmmm, he looks a lot like Dwight Eisenhower.” I apologize, that is Eisenhower, the photograph is by Yousuf Karsh.

Two books of his work on Amazon:
