Pinhole Day April

Filed under: Photo — Captoe @ 9:37 pm

Worldwide Pinhole Photography Day is Sunday. This means you’ve just 4 days left to build a pinhole camera, shoot some film (or paper), get the shots developed, scanned, and uploaded to celebrate in style.

Start at f295 for bunches of info about making pinhole images.

The Onion - Finding a Religion

Filed under: Christian — Captoe @ 9:31 pm

It does not speak well of me or my day that this is the funniest thing I came across today. Either I am so cynical that I can chuckle at the church-shopping ways of the spiritually hungry, or I was up to my elbows in unfunny, or both.
The Onion is not intended for readers under 18 years of age. Or so they say.

Thomas at American Papist found it worth a laugh too, though, so maybe I’m not a total loss.

A little remedial work is in order

Filed under: Christian — Captoe @ 9:34 am

Dear Mr. and Mrs. America,

We’re going to be holding a special summer session due to the nation’s falling behind in it’s bible studies. The country will be unable to move on to the third grade without additional summertime help.

We live in the land of biblical idiots - Los Angeles Times
In a religious literacy quiz I have administered to undergraduates for the last two years, students tell me that Moses was blinded on the road to Damascus and that Paul led the Israelites on their exodus out of Egypt. Surveys that are more scientific have found that only one out of three U.S. citizens is able to name the four Gospels, and one out of 10 think that Joan of Arc was Noah’s wife. No wonder pollster George Gallup has concluded that the United States is “a nation of biblical illiterates.”

After calling on Ireland for help in recitfying this matter, I have determined that they are all invited to summer school as well.

Catholic World News : Irish survey shows religious ignorance– especially among youth A minority of respondents between 19 and 24 could name the three Persons of the Trinity. Just 47% of the young people answered that question correctly, while 76% of those over 64 gave the proper answer, and 66% of the overall poll sample.

Mmmm, Tastes like Chicken

Tyrannosaurus Rex, star of silver screen and Cretaceous period, tasted like chicken. Nummy. Think of the wings.

Dinosaur Soft Tissue Sequenced; Similar to Chicken Proteins
In a related study, a team led by Mary Higby Schweitzer of North Carolina State University conducted tests that also revealed the presence of collagen in the T. rex remains.

In one experiment, antibodies that normally react in the presence of chicken collagen reacted strongly to the dinosaur protein, suggesting a similar molecular identity.

Church Teaching is Shocking

Filed under: Catholic, Christian — Captoe @ 12:12 pm

The Incarnation; shocking.
The Virgin Birth; shocking.
The Crucifixion; shocking.
Forgiveness of sins; shocking.
The Eucharist; shocking.

Consistently teaching the same thing for nearly two thousand years straight; not shocking.

Catholic World News : Church teaching is “shocking,” French candidate argues
Apr. 12, 2007 (CWNews.com) - A leading French presidential candidate has described Catholic teaching on sexuality as “shocking.”

The French pol in question said calling homosexuality sin is shocking.  A point of clarification: If the word is being used to describe inclinations the church does not teach that, rather the church identifies behaviors as sins.

Foolish and slow of heart

Filed under: Christian — Captoe @ 12:06 pm

We are fools.

The resurrected Christ appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. He speaks to them about the prophesies fulfilled in his death. He tells them it was necessary for their friend and leader to die. He calls them foolish and slow of heart. Oh ye of little faith indeed (that’s Matt. 16).

USCCB - NAB - Luke 24
(25) And he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are! How slow of heart to believe all that the prophets spoke! (26) Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer * these things and enter into his glory?”(27)Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them what referred to him in all the scriptures.

Here they are, men from among the closest to Jesus in his life, in the presence of the ressurected Christ and there is something they still cannot do. They cannot recognize him. They do not know him.

How can we know Him today when we didn’t know him during his years on earth? How can we know him when he does not walk resurrected among us explaining how the prophesies referred to Him? How can we know Him when they didn’t?

USCCB - NAB - Luke 24
(30) And it happened that, while he was with them at table, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them. (31) With that their eyes were opened and they recognized him, but he vanished from their sight.

They knew him in the blessing and breaking of the bread. Maybe we can too.
