Apparently, this passes for humor, art or both in some circles.

We’ve a long way to go.

Position Statement: Orange slices

Filed under: Photo, Position Statements — Captoe @ 11:21 am

When cut to eat, oranges should be cut along longitudinal lines such that no cut transsects more than one segment membrane.

Anything less is just pithy. Sorry Mom.

The rule for garnishes is exactly the reverse.

Lispers in the Woggia

Filed under: Catholic — Captoe @ 11:19 pm

The only things I know for certain are:

Lispers in the Woggia is one seriously funny blog.

Still in its first month of existence, it has already made easy use of five languages and quoted a Carly Simon lyric. Some quotes:

  • his cassock’s waist gathers and peau de soie collar showed it came from Barbiconi’s Spring 2004 prêt-à-porter collection
  • non-smoking Pisces with dreamy eyes and a degree in mostaccioli from Tufts
  • Can that be the gnashing of Tridentine teeth I hear?

Konrad?
Someone please tell me these aren’t a guy’s legs. The owner of these legs, presumably, is the one signing the posts as “Konrad”.

God’s Call

Filed under: Catholic, Christian — Captoe @ 4:50 pm

It’s a new kind of “Turn on, tune in, drop out“. The Washington Post has discovered a novel way to drop out of the rat race and go get happy. It’s a radical counter-counter-culture man!
From the Washington Post:

Hearing God’s Call In Search for Happiness
Picking at her black fingernail polish and fiddling with her shirt and shoulder-length blond hair, 16-year-old Chelsea Sledgeski seems every bit the typical teen.Like her friends on the basketball team or her classmates hanging around Anne Arundel County’s new malls and subdivisions, she has pressures: divorced parents, an injury that landed her on the team bench and an argument she just had with her father about her report card.

In the past few months, though, she has found a salve. It sets her apart from her family, her neighbors, even her friends at Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church, where she stood beaming at a packed youth Mass one recent Sunday night.

Sledgeski is considering becoming a nun.

The WaPo article is really pretty good. It explains the appeal of ordained or consecrated life in terms of happiness.  As secular as it is, it does paint the life of Holy orders in a positive light.
Dappled Things read the article, so did The Cafeteria is Closed, while the American Papist says he might read it after a nap. I hope he does.
We have recently learned that four Sisters of Mary the Mother of the Eucharist are coming to our home parish, two will be teaching at the parish school.

Beware the mead

Filed under: Uncategorized — Captoe @ 5:06 pm

Too much wine and the hots for one of the local girls is a recipe for trouble. You could lose your head.

From the book of Judith 12:15 - 13:10

12:15 And she arose and dressed herself out with her garments, and going in she stood before his face.
12:16 And the heart of Holofernes was smitten, for he was burning with the desire of her.
12:17 And Holofernes said to her: Drink now, and sit down and be merry for thou hast found favour before me.
12:18 And Judith said: I will drink my lord, because my life is magnified this day above all my days.
12:19 And she took and ate and drank before him what her maid had prepared for her.
12:20 And Holofernes was made merry on her occasion, and drank exceeding much wine, so much as he had never drunk in his life.
13:1 And when it was grown late, his servants made haste to their lodgings, and Vagao shut the chamber doors, and went his way.
13:2 And they were all overcharged with wine.
13:3 And Judith was alone in the chamber.
13:4 But Holofernes lay on his bed, fast asleep, being exceedingly drunk.
13:5 And Judith spoke to her maid to stand without before the chamber, and to watch:
13:6 And Judith stood before the bed praying with tears, and the motion of her lips in silence
13:7 Saying: Strengthen me, O Lord God of Israel, and in this hour look on the works of my hands, that as thou hast promised, thou mayst raise up Jerusalem thy city: and that I may bring to pass that which I have purposed, having a belief that it might be done by thee.
13:8 And when she had said this, she went to the pillar that was at his bed’s head, and loosed his sword that hung tied upon it.
13:9 And when she had drawn it out, she took him by the hair of his head, and said: Strengthen me, O Lord God, at this hour.
13:10 And she struck twice upon his neck, and cut off his head, and took off his canopy from the pillars, and rolled away his headless body.

My understanding of “took off his canopy from the pillars” is that the Assyrian General Holofernes lost more than his head that night.

Later, said about Judith; General’s-bane, Foe-Hammer, Assyrian-slayer:

13:31 Blessed art thou by thy God in every tabernacle of Jacob, for in every nation which shall hear thy name, the God of Israel shall be magnified on occasion of thee.

The Photographer’s Rights

In most cases, in America (the home of the free and the brave), that rent-a-cop does NOT have the right to stop you from taking a photograph. The following is a link to a legal cheat sheet. Know your rights.

Baby conservatives

Newsflash: There’s a Liberal at UC Berkeley. [make an eyes-wide-with-shock face now.]

The Toronto Star published a report on a paper that has deemed to determine that whiners grow up to be politically conservative. In other words, liberals are psychologically superior.
TheStar.com - How to spot a baby conservative

`I found (the Jack Block study) to be biased, shoddy work, poor science at best’Jeff Greenberg
University of Arizona

The study hardly merits debunking beyond this: It was a 20 year study on 95 preschoolers from the campus of UC Berkeley. None of the studied subjects is much more than 20 years old right now. Further, and you’ve thought of this too, UC Berkeley is hardly a representative sample.

Conservatives have attacked the study and questioned its validity. I, would prefer that it were valid, because…

If this study were accurate, my assessment of pre-school age kids in America today would predict landslide Republican victories, overwhelming domination of both houses of congress, and an uninterrupted era of Republican Presidents starting very soon and lasting long into the future.
Alas.

Crow
The RSPB said the crows could be attacking because they are mating
A flock of crows is terrorising people living on an estate in Warwick, local residents have said. The birds initially attacked cars by pulling off windscreen wipers and scratching the paintwork. But now they have moved on to attacking the residents themselves, similar to scenes in the Alfred Hitchcock thriller The Birds.

I’m sure Aunt Beeb would’ve said something if any eyeballs had been pecked out, so, stay tuned.
